It was beautiful this morning, cool and sunny as we headed out for the day. It did not take long for the dog games to begin, within 10 miles we were chased 11 times by pissed off dogs. There were pit bulls, Dobermans, German shepherds, and Rottweilers just to name a few. The girls were so scared they could hardly ride anymore. Every time one would come after us all hell would break loose as we sprinted to get away. I heard plenty of swear words from the Brits and Aussies. It made me laugh so hard each time when it was over. Fortunately for us, none of them came after us while we were going uphill. When it comes to biking rural Mississippi dogs are quite a challenge .
I rescued a little box turtle off the road today, I guess that was my good deed other than helping get the girls past the dogs. Mississippi is beautiful, rolling hills, lots of hardwoods and pines, and a lot of water. Most of the rural black population seem to be far better off than their cousins in the cities. They have nice homes and lots of room. I am not sure what they all do for a living but they seem to be getting by ok. The different smells today made the ride more fun as you use one of the senses you don't use seeing the country in a car. There were fragrant blossoms on the trees, the smell of fresh cut hay, the earthy smell of dirt as the fields were being plowed. There was the sweet aroma of burning wood and even bacon coming out of some houses. We did have one herd of playful cows race us as we rode by. You see so much more on a bike as you slowly ride along. Speaking of slow we did 138 miles today with our third largest climbing day so far. The roads were rough and steep, so the day seemed to take forever, over 10 hours on the saddle is a long time. The wind was also against us all day, I sure wish it would change direction soon. Love you all.
Life Is Good Ride On
Oh my goodness- what a day!!! I would be petrified of the dogs, just like the girls! There is a dog in our neighborhood that scares the living daylights out of us when we run. It's always with it's owner, but it is so vicious and she can barely control the thing. It could definitely do damage if it broke loose from it's owner. I wish you could bring that little box turtle home. The kids would go nuts. You'll have to see Ben's bearded dragon when you get back because it's huge! You're doing a great job with your descriptions of the terrain. I can envision, and almost smell, the things you describe. Thank you so much for the beautiful card. You made me tear up! I love you. Have a great, safe day riding! Don't beat anyone up in your dreams :). How much do you have to eat these days?
ReplyDeleteHi Jacque, we eat anything we want. We are burning around 6000 calories a day. Thanks so much for your comments I look forward to reading them with great anticipation. Love you guy's.
DeleteAs you were talking about the smell of the environment and how you wouldn't smell them driving along in a car. That's what Bill and I say when we are riding our motorcycles. Also the changes in temperature when we are going up and down hills. All around different experience. Your on the down side. Can't wait to talk to you about all your experiences. You and Deb will have to come over for supper! Do you think you will want to ride the bike right away when you get back? Ha Ha. Dreams are always really weird. Can never figure out what they are about. Too bad Joseph in the bible isn't around to let us know what the dreams mean like he did for the king. ha ha again. Take care. Miss you! Renee
ReplyDeleteHey Renee, thanks for your encouraging words. We will get together when I get back. As far as the bike goes I think I will take at least a week off for sure.
DeleteIt amazes me how strong you've gotten over the past 2,000 miles. Think, yesterday was your second longest day and although it was 10 hours in the saddle you didn't even complain about it. You are amazing! So what's with all the free ranging dogs in the South? Have you invested in a blow horn yet? You've got to invent something for bikers and runners to keep dogs away! Or put Lance in charge of that. Only 6 more days!!! Are you going to take a month off riding when your done?
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of your help sweetheart , can't wait to see you.
DeleteWhat a crazy day you had, and an even crazier dream! Are there ever any owners around when these dogs chase you, or are they wild? And I'm not surprised that you woke up at 1:30 hungry. I would imagine with burning that many calories, you are hungry all the time! You are doing amazing! Almost there!!
ReplyDeleteHey Amber, thanks for aii you do. I am so excited to see you guys.
